What would Rosa say? A Personal Reflection on Language Learning and Connection
Can You Build Meaningful Relationships Over Skype? A Personal Reflection on Language Learning and Connection
In today’s post-Covid reality, many people are asking: Can we really build or maintain a meaningful relationship with someone over Skype? As someone who actively uses Italki for language learning, I believe the answer is a resounding yes. My experience with Italki, which facilitates one-on-one conversations with teachers or informal language partners, has shown me that you can develop deep, lasting connections without ever being in the same room. Let me tell you why.
There’s a Spanish word, sabiduría, that encapsulates wisdom gained through life experience. I’m not sure there’s an exact English equivalent, but it’s a concept that became very real to me through my conversations with my Spanish partner, Rosa. More than 20 years older than me, Rosa had lived through many of life’s highs and lows. Her rich life experience made her the embodiment of sabiduría, and I was fortunate enough to benefit from it.
Building Relationships Beyond Distance
Through my conversations with Rosa, I found that we could share deeply personal thoughts, things I might not openly discuss with others. I confided in her about changes in my relationship with my mother after my father’s death, my concerns as an only child, and how I felt burdened with the responsibility of the future. Rosa understood because she had lived through similar experiences and could empathize with my emotions, offering her wisdom and advice.
Rosa’s perspective made me question my life choices in a way I hadn’t allowed anyone else to. For example, when she advised me to carefully consider the decision not to have children, I would have reacted defensively if anyone else had asked me that but because of the unique connection we had, I welcomed her opinion without hesitation. There’s something special about being able to speak so openly when learning a new language—it feels like there’s less room for judgment and more room for genuine conversation.
Can You Form Deep Bonds Over Skype?
So, can we truly form meaningful connections and build relationships on Skype? My experience with Rosa proves that, yes, we absolutely can. Speaking in a second language often breaks down barriers, creating a space where vulnerability and openness can flourish. I would have never crossed paths with Rosa in my day-to-day life, but through language learning on Italki, I had the privilege of connecting with her in a way that continues to influence my life today.
Even after losing touch when I stopped actively studying Spanish, there are still moments when I reflect on a decision or a thought and wonder, What would Rosa say?

It’s great to get other people’s perspectives, especially when faced with life’s difficult decisions. Sometimes just one phrase or sentence from someone is enough to give us a bit of clarity. I’ve definitely got a few little mantras that I now carry around in my head as a result of conversations with friends or incedental meetings with strangers. We definitely remeber what resonates. Language is powerful.
